I don't think it's fair to call a concern over something that's actually happened to you paranoia!
I sold my first 9000 to a coworker who turned out to be a bit of a deadbeat. He didn't register or title the car, got pulled over by the police, and due to it not being registered it got impounded. Guess who got the phone call when that happened? As far as the state was concerned the car was my responsibility as it was titled in my name. I had to fork over several hundred dollars and deal with getting an unregistered car out of impound. Had I chosen to ignore the problem, I'm sure I eventually would have ended up in court and paying a whole lot more.
That was fairly easy to deal with as it all happened in the next county to where I lived. If something similar were to happen with a buyer who lives 1000 miles away, it would be way more trouble.
Oh and if you think it's just my opinion, you can hear a lawyer say exactly the same thing at the link below.
