Yeah, the heads are expensive. The thing is the bottom ends pretty much never fail on these engines, so if you have an engine on hand, selling the head renders a $1,200 engine worthless. That makes the heads pricey.
I haven't done a leakdown test yet because a) it's very hard on this car (access to rotate the crankshaft is very difficult) and b) I'm not sure it would really tell me anything. All would really do is verify there's a connection between the cooling system and one or more combustion chambers, and I already know that.
