OT: End of Career License Expirations Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 31 Mar 2021 08:52:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What to do regarding expiring licenses/certifications that I will never again use in my retirement.
My PMP (Project Management Professional) certification expired at year-end 2020 and it's demise didn't bother me one bit. I obtained this certification in only one month's time under threat of bonus reduction/elimination if I didn't comply with what I saw as a mindless corporate edict. No real feeling of ownership with this one.
But now my PE (Professional Engineer) license is set to expire in October of this year. I know I will never use it again. I have been out of the design arena for so long that I have already turned away small consulting opportunities for friends due to uncertainty of my knowledge base, even though my license is currently valid.
But this license required two 8 hour exams to obtain; one after completion of my undergrad studies and one after four years of engineering practice, coupled with personal recommendations from other licensed engineers. I also possess an NCEES Council Record associated with this license which is extremely rare for anyone with an industrial background, and which 'sort of' allows me to practice anywhere in the Country - with payment of additional fees to the states in question of course. I have a far stronger personal attachment to this license, although in today's bizarre employment environment the PMP certification is more valuable than a PE license when being hired!
Cost is $100 for 12-months of access to a litany of PDH courses, plus $80 for two years of licensure. The 12-months of access to courses will actually allow me to be re-licensed for the 2021-2023 AND 2023-2035 time periods since I will be able to obtain the required future PDH's after the 2021 license is awarded. So cost is not really a concern in this decision.
What have others done in a similar situation? Engineers, Architects, Attorney Bar Fees, CPA license renewals, etc.
I can either say it was great to be licensed as a PE for most of my career, even though my job didn't require it for the final decades, and let it die now. Or I can continue to hang on to those unused initials that only have meaning to me.
