We have similar EIT and aerospace backgrounds.
Taking the EIT was a requirement for graduation from Georgia Tech in 1980. I passed, but a few people I know walked in to the test, signed their name, and walked out thus fulfilling the requirement of ‘taking’ the test but earning a zero on it. They never had any intention of becoming a PE.
The only people I knew who planned to become PEs were civil and nuclear engineers. There was absolutely no need to become a PE if one was buried in classified programs in aerospace. None, and I can’t even recall any though there had to be a few. Maybe PEs existed at the commercial aerospace companies like Boeing and Douglas back in the day.
In any event, I agree on the renewal just in case. I retired for four years and got back into aerospace two years ago to put my kids through college with no debt. Plus I was somewhat intellectually bored with being ‘retired.’ That might happen to Roger too.
And, FWIW, my current company is big on hiring Jurassics like us because there are knowledge gaps we fill that younger engineers apparently cannot. Knowledge transfer is part of the plan.
