in snow country (Alaska and N. Idaho)for 20 years, and during that time my Saabs (all 99's)did much better than our Jeep Cherokee. In all, I've had 4 Saabs (currently a 9-5 wagon) and 4 Volvos. I sold my 1998 Volvo V70 (not XC, just FWD) to get the Saab after just 10 months because (1) I wanted manual transmission, (2) the Volvo seats, with no adjustable headrest, are not comfortable for small people (if you wife is under 5'4" she may find the same), (3) lots of other reasons. During the time I had the Volvo, it had several warranty repairs---headlight wiper motor, electric window switch, and there were 5 recall repairs done on it before I got it (I bought it slightly used). I've had my Saab 7 months now with zero problems (where's my wood desk when I need it. . .) I love this car. I put a baby seat in the back last week and it was fine. It would surely accomodate 2, but I don't know about 3--it probably depends on the type of child seat.

As for performance, both cars handle great; although probably the V70 was slightly better on the curves. I don't think the overall quality is as high as the old 240 series, though. I loved taking my old '87 245 in for service. All these V70 and S70 owners would be at the counter, all saying "I'm here for my 10K service, and here's a long list of other things wrong." Then I would step up and say, "I'm here for my 180K service, there's nothing at all wrong." My point is just that I was a loyal Volvo owner, and now I'm back to Saabs. I think the 9-5 is simply a better car than the V70. Drive one and see if you agree. And your wife--as I said, unless she's medium height to tall, she probably will prefer the fit of the Saab seats. Why do you need 4WD in Texas anyway?
