I had a '99 Audi quattro. Had to drive it very hard in some extremely bad conditions to keep my wife in her 9-5 at bay. I had Conti siped all seasons and quattro. She had Gislaved's in 215/55R16 size. She wasn't really trying, just driving. I now have a 9-5 wagon and followed an Audi A4 up Rabbit Ears pass in very wet, slush, slick, packed "cement" conditions. Visibility was poor and we were not driving recklessly, but still moving better than everyone else and going around others. With the poor viz he actually pulled over at the top to have a look at who or what was staying with him. For my money, it's got to be pretty bad to "need" AWD. And you better put snow tires on if you want an advantage, but the Saab is incredible. I also had a Volvo 850 front drive with snows and it was not even close to the Saab. Both Front drive. Both with highzoot-made in Finland-$150 a corner snow tires and no comparison. Go figure.
