I agree with HR- never try to do this by phone. That is just wasting your time and stomach lining.
First, canceling your credit card may be a show of defiance, but it WILL NOT make the mistake go away. Next, realize that this will cost you time and some money to fix, and that there's nothing you can do about it - take a deep breath, and know that with perseverance you can win.
Your first step is to write a letter to Experian AND Discover, disputing the charge and asking for documentation. Send the letters by Certified Mail, return recepit requested. Keep a copy of every letter, and your mail receipts in a folder. Document every correspondence. Stay away from the phone - they can promise you anything on the phone and the words are gone the minute they're spoken.
When you apply for a loan, bring along your folder to show that you are disputing the error. With a perfectly clean record and documentation that you are actively fighting a relatively small charge, the loan officer will believe you. Loan officers see applicants all the time, and they've seen more credit report mistakes than you'll ever want to - and they pretty quickly know the honest folks from the hacks.
It may take a few months, but it will get cleared up. Just one of the joys of credit.
As to the conspiracy to drop you, I sincerely doubt it. I, too, pay off my card every month, much to the consternation of the credit card company. I don't care what the interest charge is, because I never see it. Yes, the company doesn't make as much on me as on someone that runs a nice fat balance. But they still make money. Every time I charge at a store, the company takes a few percent cut from the store. I generate enough volume to make it worth the credit card company's while.
Two things to remember -
If they really didn't want you, they'd just drop you. Why go through all this subterfuge when they can just cancel the card and tell you to go away?
Second- I remember this whenever I feel 'they're out to get me'-
"Never assume conspiracy when mere incompentence will do"
So don't argue with idiots - they'll just bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. Follow the procedures and remember to breathe.
Good luck!
