I would take the 'coup' theories with a grain of salt. Rumours in the car press back when the Aurora was introduced was that GM had given Oldsmobile's an ultimatum. The Aurora was their last chance to prove itself and they did everything they could with that car... radical styling, Cadillac Northstar engine...
Ultimately I think Oldsmobile got lost in the mix... it occupied a middle ground between Pontiac, Chevy, Buick and Cadillac and did not define itself well in one niche. Chevy = economy; Pontiac = sport; Cadillac = luxury; Buick = ??. Five (or even four) major automotive brands in one market may just be too much.
Too bad, some great history with Oldsmobile.
