made you a VERY serious student. The armed services usually do. I met a guy when I worked in the oilpatch, same age as me. He and I were both starting out as drilling engineers. He spent a couple of years in the Navy as a fighter mechanic. He started taking some classes and finished his ME at Tulane. Not bad for someone the readily admitted that he WAS NOT college material when he graduated from High school.
I would go to grad school, especially if you were in the Navy. IMHO, the navy plus the research project more than makes up for ANY experience you might get in a job for the couple of years it takes to finish. Most entry level engineering jobs don't REQUIRE and engineering degree, mostly logical thought and a general understanding of physics.
Remember the three rules of engineering:
1. F=ma
2. You can't push a rope.
and finally,
3. if it breaks make it bigger (except in aircraft where you make it stronger for the same or less weight at 3-4x the cost)!
