If you want to major in engineering/science, i would recommend a PC system because most of the programs for engineering (matlab,etc.) have the latest editions out on PCs. Also, you will find a lot more people with more kowledge about WinXPro and the like. so if you are going to MIT, get a PC. Macs have the best graphic software out on the market, so if you major in graphic design, get a mac. The best value will be your desktop. Wait till you get to school to buy your software and computer because usually the store will run some good deals (especially on software). Laptops are nice (i own one for engineering grad school), but most schools now have easy computer access anywhere. to make it short, i would get a PC desktop with the latest and greatest and buy the software when you get to school.
