Do you want to spend your time working, or do you want to spend your time editing CONFIG.SYS and resolving IRQ conflicts? Do you enjoy searching the Internet for the correct drivers? Do you want to see the Blue Screen of Death several times a day? Are you ready to give a sample of your DNA to Bill for his "Registry?"
Yeah, I'm biased. My view is that people who are compelled to use Macs by their employers go ahead and use them at home, too. As a student, you have somewhat more freedom.
I have been a computer user since 1971 and a MSFT DOS user since 1983. I am not the stereotypical Mac user who is afraid of computers. I was a big Mac skeptic when they first came out. But I switched to Mac after System 7 came out because it was so good. And IMHO Mac OS X remains superior to Windows.
Macs are great for music and they do everything else well, too. Mac capabilities are a superset of Wintel capabilities. For example, it's super easy to edit movies on Mac. Don't even think about trying that on a Wintel.
I don't think you can go wrong with a Mac desktop or portable. I have both,. My only concern would be the cost of service on out-of-warranty clamshell-style iBooks. But that style is no longer sold new.
Good luck with MIT -- hope you make it!
