Technology is chaning too quickly. Plan on purchasing a new system for your junior year. This will also give you a better chance to match computer power to computer needs (as software will be very different three years hence).

Mac vs. Windows is not the same old argument since Apple upgraded to OS X (that's 10 for those who don't follow Macs). While it looks Macintosh-ish, this new OS is really an industrial grade UNIX kernel with a Mac face. My guess is that by the time you graduate, Apple will have released the Mac OS for other than proprietary hardware. None the less, the Mac OS X (UNIX) married to one of their hardware platforms will, in all unbiased bench tests, outperform Windows. The Mac can also run literally thousands of all the Windows software via SoftPC or VirtualPC Windows emulators (they actually include the Mac OS 9.2 emulator as part of OS X).

Laptop or Desktop? Personal choice. I purchased a PowerBook G4 (Titanium) a couple of months ago and use it 95% of the time now — what a dream. Mine is the "old" 800MHz version versus the 1GHz dream they just released. By the time you purchase one next year that speed should be up and the price down — again. Unless you are really cranking some graphics, ala digital video at the professional level (Maya et. al.), you will find all the horsepower you need in a laptop.

I work in the world of electronic publishing and have had numerous developers work for me. I've had several leave the Mac world for Windows development and decry its superiority — only to have them all denounce Windows in no more than six months. Mac is a superior development and work platform. Don't take my word for it, or anyone elses for that matter. Get to a store that carries both platforms and start playing with the machines. Buy the one that makes the most sense to you!

$$$ issues? By the time you are ready to purchase something next year, the bleading edge user will be ready to dump their year old (or six month old) "ancient" stuff. Buy used and save a ton. Electronics are fairly reliable these days. If something doesn't break within the first one or two months of use, its likely it won't for its anticipated lifetime.
