Warning, this is pretty rambling:
I've basically been a Mac user most of my life and bought a first-generation iMac before college. I use it basically for papers, graphics, music, movies, and occasionally games. It's over four years old now and still has all the power I need, including pretty extensive Photoshop use and such, plus it's really easy to transport. I'm used to a Mac, so windows feels clunky to me and I'm not familiar with all the software. Hell, even using Microsoft Office on the Mac annoys me (by the way, if you get a Mac you'll have to buy Office or mooch it from a friend, but it's pretty cheap for students.)
Stand alone I'd say the Mac is a better system, however, if you want a system you can just plug in and work seemlessly with everything and everyone else then I'd recommend a PC, perhaps somewhat ironically. Order up the Dell or Gateway system with monitor and printer like ~80% of other students do and you won't worry about drivers, not being able to use the "Network Neighborhood" without extra software, and if you're doing certain technical things the preferred software MAY not be available on the Mac.
In a way it's like a Saab vs. a Toyohonda. The Mac is a bit quirky, sometimes a bit harder to work with, and a lot of people will criticize your choice, but it's still fast, efficient, attractive, and very well designed. Still, sometimes it's easier to just have a have a PC / drive a Honda.
Just some thoughts,
Craig
