Nick...
1) MAC vs PC. Probably pretty equal in terms of function and performance these days... Mac's were probably more reliable at one time, but since Win/NT & WIN2000 came out, they seem to be fairly stable.. Most people who experience problems get themselves into trouble when trying to install new hardware devices, etc. MAC limits your ability to do this which is why some so passionately believe they are more stable... Plus it's a Davey vs. Goliath thing for some folks as well (Much like us with our Saab's !!).. In any case, I would recommend going with the flow on this one.. If you have problems, its much easier to get help with a windows based platform, as most students will be able to help you out, etc...
2) Laptop vs. Desktop. Memory and storage limitations are mostly a thing of the past with today's laptops... plus there are lots of new types of removable storage media out there that you can plug in via a USB port if thing get tight down the road. many laptops now also come with some very high quality 15" displays.. and you can always add a mouse and keyboard if you want when working on it from home/dorm. In college you'll want the portability of the laptop .. going to a friends dorm, library, etc. Also with a laptop you have some nice infrared capabilities for file swapping with friends, etc... just be sure to get a cable lock to protect your investment..
3) The thing you have to consider regardless of your choices on these matters is that technology will change significantly in the next 4 yrs.. so do you get a top end machine now, one which can be expanded in terms of memory, storage, etc. and stretched for your full 4 yrs. ? Or do you get an average machine to start to get you past the first couple of years, and then refresh once again down the line ? Just a thought to consider....
Best of luck with school....
