Yeah, car salesman are a different breed. Many of the VW ones I called were downright slimy, but it was pretty entertaining overall (felt like a bad mob movie).
The dealership that got me all hot and bothered was a Subaru/Volvo/VW/Audi one. The salepeople were no worse than your average car salesman: same old stupid games (my manager's going to use his hot tongs and pull my fingernails out if I let you have it at that price!), but nothing over the top.
The service guys, on the other hand, tried to get me to buy a new engine ($4000) for my Subaru (which had timed its one breakdown to coincide with me trying to sell it. In fact, it broke down on the way back from test-driving a few Saabs...she was a jealous girl) All it needed was a new waterpump and timing belt. I even had a deposit down on a 1.8T GTI at the time, at th4e same dealership. I talked to service managers and mechanics, and got the same brick wall, despite the fact I KNEW the car did not need a new engine (they thought they had me trapped, I guess).
I called a towtruck, fixed the Subie elsewhere, withdrew my deposit, and never looked back. I wonder if dealers realize that if they condescend and treat you like a dope, you probably won't give them your money, depite what those fine people in marketing may think.
Needless to say, I didn't buy my 1999 SE at a dealer either, though my experiences have been ok so far with my warranty work. And I am totally in love with my Saab!
Best,
Lutfisk
