I've driven a 2001 GTI with that engine although it was only an automatic. and I've also driven a 2001 Passat with that engine (auto w/tiptronic)
I'm not sure if they made any changes for '02 or not but it was definitely more fun in the golf- but adequate in the Passat. Depending which Saab engine your comparing it to makes a difference. Compared to an '02 Aero there isn't much to say, but compare it to the 2.0 9-3 and you're getting closer. IMO, the Saab has less turbo lag and smoother power delivery. The VW is not as smooth, but has more tuning possibilities (I'm talking about the availability of aftermarket products in North America- either one can be tuned to outrageous power levels if you really put your mind to it)
I read somewhere that VW targets a demographic that "wants to blend in with the crowd" So don't expect the same kind of uniqueness you'll get with the Saab- in fact, you'd better remember your plate number when you go to the mall or you might have to wait 'till everyone else leaves to figure out which one's yours! If you're considering the GTI you might want to get an insurance quote first- affordable power means since the youngsters are crashing them the insurance premiums tend to be higher. Overall though, If I were to buy a VW today I'd get the 1.8T over the VR6.
