When people externalize the costs of their behavior, they should pay. Depends on the facts. I said porch light. Its more like a halogen spot aimed into the road. People say hot coffee, it was a 75 year old woman who had 2d and 3d degree burns on her genitals and McD's treated her like sh!t.
In order to get a verdict you need to show a pattern, and that the defendant had notice of the problem and/or that a reasonable man would not have engaged in the conduct.
Yes the awards are too high, but this is a function, partially, of a low quality jury pool. Come on, could you get out of jury duty? The people who can't are generally unemployed or otherwise of the lower socio-economic order. They want to GIVE money away.
