Capitalism in its pure form with no restraints would collapse in short time as well.

Its not black and white. Each system must decide on a balance between pure Capitalism and pure communism. Depending on what a countries priorities are, varying levels of "Socialism" exist. As a Canadian, we are more socialist than the US, but perhaps not so much as some other countries.

It is interesting to note that according to UN quality of life surveys, "Socialist" countries such as the Nordic countries and Canada tend to provide the best quality of life for the average citizen. Studies on the US have shown that wealthy Americans have a far better quality of life than most other countries, but the converse is also true. Shown as an average, the overall quality of life in a Capitalist country is directly proportional to the amount of Social policy employed by the government of said country.
