Since no standardized test info exists, I may have a better "feel" for this after I do my oil analysis & cut open my 9-3's filters at 5k miles & then again at 10k miles (same oil, new filter).
I don't remember if you're OOW or not. If not, changing your OE filter somewhere in the range of 50%-60% of the oil change interval seems like a safely-conservative way to increase oil cleanliness. The drawback is whether or not you're increasing wear due to the one extra dry-filter startup. If you're OOW, then maybe it's safer to go with an oversized filter & let the extra dirt capacity do the work for you. The drawback here, of course, is that you don't get to "freshen" the sump with a pint of new oil.
Am I being non-committal enough? Sorry. I simply don't know. My 900 requires a bit of topping up throughout the 10k interval, so it's an easy choice to use a PF13 for the duration of the period. My 9-3 doesn't need any in 10k miles, but I'm taking a sample at 5k & a visual examination of the filter seems valid at that point, to accompany the analysis data. Would I change the filter if I wasn't also analyzing the oil? I'm not sure. Probably not. But then again ...
