Many years ago I used nothing but Fram, because they were rated highly by Consumer Reports. Then the infamous Minimopar study came out and revealed that Frams use cardboard end caps!
Fram insists that this is not a problem, and millions of people use their filters, seemingly with no ill effects. Certain OEMs like Honda trust Fram to manufacture oil filters for them, so how bad could Fram filters really be?
Still, if you look at a Fram filter disassembled, it ain't pretty... pictures and descriptions at the site below.
The best bang for the buck is probably the one mentioned by Stephen G., the Purolator Pure One, at about $6, sold at Pep Boys.
If you want to spend less on oil filters, around $3, I think you're better off using an ACDelco PF53, preferably the U.K.-made version, if you can still find it, since it's identical to the SAAB OE filter. Or the U.S.-made version of the PF53, which looks better-built than the Fram too. Plus the U.S.-made PF53 has the bypass valve in the "preferred location"
