I understand too... I've got 3 saabs... We were considering subaru as an option at one point and rented a few of them for some long trips. The awd is an appealing feature around here in the snow. We just found a lot lacking when compared to SAAB or Volvo, or the other european cars.
I think in the USA, Subarus are actually at a significantly lower price point than SAAB or Volvo. Here in Canada, the prices are in a similar ballpark, especially used or after discounting. I think the shortcomings in refinement are more easy to take if the price is lower.
I think another factor that draws people to subies is the availability of manual transmissions. Most manufacturers have dropped that completely for some of these vehicle classes. Subaru is at least fairly driver oriented in intent (if not always in execution)!
