I don't know specifically when the problem was cured, but I am pretty sure it was before the end of the EJ. That particular engine had many problems, from head gaskets to perma-leaky valve cover gaskets to oil pumps that ate themselves. Definitely a different set of problems than Saabs have historically had, but of course the 54 degree V6 did have its fair share. ;)
I hear what you're saying about the attraction - on paper I really like them, but I've never connected with them in any other way than practicality. They're fine, but in all the Subarus I've driven I've never walked away thinking "This is THE car." I really, *really* wanted a 2005 Legacy GT wagon with a 6-speed (only year in the US) but prices on them have held so high that I lost interest. I like those cars, but not "more than an Aero Sportcombi." So, yeah, I have an Aero Sportcombi. :D
