Ya to me Subarus were always bland cars with dull handling, a wheezy engine, tinny build quality and materials, and the complications of a AWD system that I didn't need. For the same money on the used market you could get a powerful, smooth, and comfortable Saab that felt like a vastly more expensive car (and probably was new in fairness).
Of course the WRX and the performance Legacy models that were largely withheld for the US are totally different animals and I absolutely get the appeal of those, but that's obviously not what's bringing in the Portland types that love their Outbacks so much.
I did have a newer Legacy as a rental recently and was very impressed with the suspension and rigidity of the platform and the interior materials and styling were pretty nice too, so I could be won over yet, but without a performance model there isn't really a lot of personal interest. And it still wouldn't do an AWD drift in the parking lot :)
