Anyone here know about Mazda Miatas?

I've had the wants for a two-seat roadster for a long time and keep coming back to the Miata. Although at 6'2" 200 lbs it's a tight fit with the top up, it'd be a good weather car so I probably wouldn't have the top up all that much. I know Miatas handle well and can be made a lot better. They seem pretty well built and there is a great aftermarket of parts and knowledge. And Miata-net is much like Saabnet, with the same type of knowledgeable folks who share and help each other.
If money and time were no object I'd build a Factory Five Cobra, but I can't swing $30K for a toy car. I'm thinking a used Miata that becomes a project car and gradually has a lot done to it. Would probably do some track time with it, too. Am not pulling the trigger real soon, but trying to look at what I can get away with in terms of dollars and time.
All input is welcome. TIA.
Noel
