My co-worker has a '93 (I think) - It WON'T DIE!! His is his full-time car too. He uses it for work all the time, for which we travel a LOT. We're a construction consulting company so it's been to lots of job-sites. It has tons of battle wounds and the paint is fading badly. Last summer we got a last-minute call to go to Boston for a site visit. He insisted we take his Miata rather than my highway-loving 9-5. It was a 90 degree humid day with not a cloud in the sky and we drove the whole two hours with the top down. Holy Mother! The Miata is not a highway cruiser. I'm a young whippersnapper at 20 and my lower back was screaming and my butt was asleep 30 minutes into the ride. The thing revs at about 4200rpm in 5th gear to do 75-80mph. So loud. Then after getting to Boston and watching our client hop the 5" granite curb into the site in his Audi Allroad (with the suspension fully extended) it was our turn. We just got some speed behind us and took it at an angle. !!? :0 But enough about that. He absolutely loves the car. It's his third Miata and he swears by them. His has the pop-up headlights though which always get stuck, so I'd try to avoid those years. While I can't see driving one full time (it's like sitting on a freaking skateboard) it would be tons of fun to have one as a "nice-day car" like you're looking for. You also have to watch out for other drivers. Literally, people don't see you, even if they're driving a sedan or something relatively small, and will just merge into your spot. It happened a couple times on the Boston trip. As far as I know he hasn't had much trouble with it. The radio head unit is cooked and all the speakers are blown anyway, but I think that's it. It's got 150k+ miles on it. I think his last one had over 200k before he totaled it. The best part is all the bolt holes are there for the TURBO! My uncle has a much newer, 2003 maybe (?) special edition. I haven't ridden in it but it looks so much nicer (especially the interior) than the 1993. Other than the cost (which isn't much) I'd say there's not much standing in your way of one. What year/price ranges are you looking at?
