The bullet-proof nature appeals to me... a lot! I know they aren't road trip cars, and that's OK. I have a Saab or two for that!
I'm thinking I'd get the "NB" body style without the pop-up lights. So that's a 1999-2004 I think. I'm not sure of what I'd budget--I'm just sorta thinking out loud at the moment--but it looks as if I could get a '99 or '00 in decent shape anywhere from $4-6K. I want to get something I can drive from the get-go so I can build it up a bit at a time, with the long-term plan that it'd be quite a bit more than a casual sunny day car and would see some track and autocross time. But it would *not* be a track-only car.
There's an incredible amount of aftermarket stuff available. I'd probably start with wheels, tires, suspension, frame stiffener, Sparco seats, and a roll bar. Then maybe a turbo if time and wallet allowed. Adding a turbo kit is a pricey investment (~$3K). Whatever, I'd still wouldn't spend even half of what I would building a Factory Five and I'd have just as much fun with half the cylinders.
However... if I found one with a bad engine that'd change the whole equation. Used engines go for $1200-1500 with 50K-ish miles. Then put on a turbo kit.... <GRIN>
Anyway, no immediate hurry. Am just thinking and still have to get it past my wife.
