I bought a new one in 1991 and kept it for a couple of years before trading it on something a with a back seat. I loved it! Best shifter ever, steering really communicates, race car responses. Get into a corner a little hard, lift just a bit and feel the rear end come around and then put your foot back into it. A bit of opposite lock and you're off -- magical stuff.
However, at 6'3" and 225 I never really fit in it. I was always ducking and my knees were bent too much. In fact, a few months ago when I was bit by the same bug as you, I remembered the cramped feeling I had in the Miata and I opted for a used Boxster. I'm 18 years older now and really appreciate the extra room the Porsche offers.
The Miatas have a reputation for being bulletproof. Japanese reliability and as much fun as any car out there. If you fit in one, it's a tough combination to beat. Good luck.
