So snow will almost never be an issue, unless we choose it to be. My wife is a stay at home mom with two little kids, our saab gets driven once a week, sometimes. Sometimes it gets driven once a month. I have a commuter car which I drive a ton I average 1800 miles a month. We live south of phoenix, with indian reservations all around us. The town we live in has one exit north, and one exit south that are paved roads. and the neighborhood we live in has just 1 exit currently that is paved (it is not fully developed, when the market crashed they quit building). With the monsoon rains this year, I actually had to stay home from work one day, as the road out of our community was flooded around two feet deep, neither car would have driven through that, at least I would not have driven them. It was standing water, so a truck/SUV with decent clearance could have driven through just fine I think. those are the paved roads. There are plenty of UNpaved roads that we could take, and I sometimes do in my commuter car for a change up, but after the rains they are not drivable for a car. and then we have other roads further that would never be smart to drive in a car, but can be taken by a high cleareance 4wd vehicle.
If we get something, it has to sit 2 adults and 2 kids comfortably (with the possibility of a 3rd child), with some cargo, and has to have a low range. Because my wife will use it maybe once a week or month for the shopping run, but I will start using it to take my son camping. I finally have a decent schedule at work that will allow me to do that.
I used to own 4x4 trucks and it was a frequent pastime of mine to go off roading, so if I'm gonna spend the money I will get something that can do all of the above.
The problem with a truck, is everybody will want to borrow it. I know I used to own one, and other than my wife getting pregnant with our first kid, I was glad to be rid of it so I would no longer be asked to loan it out!
We live in a small house with a small drive way, We have room for 1 car in the garage, and one car in the drive way. so a third car is not really an option.
We'll see if she changes her mind again, once this weather passes... we'll see how it goes.
