With kids, pretty soon the issue becomes seats. They like to
do things in groups, so a third row is really nice to have.
I would at least look at 7-passenger options. Plus it seems
there's more stuff to haul around. We made good use of the
full-size station wagon with the 3rd seat when the kids were
still living at home.
I'll pass on the 4wd/ground clearance issue, around here
in bad weather traffic shuts down the roads long before
the actual weather does.
Then again it is your wife and kids. Sometimes peace of mind
trumps practicality.
