shouldn't a cvt be more tunable than normal automatics? I suspect the driving characteristics reflect the bias typical of Asian manufacturers: gear fast off the line at the expense of highway passing (combined with high revving low torque engines). I have never driven an Asian automatic I could tolerate. Fundamentally, it sells cars: it's impossible to evaluate touring characteristics on a 5 minute test drive, but vrooom off the line... sells cars... IIRC, the gearing for the sticks was similar... I bet if SAAB had made a car with CVT it would be good on the highway... but with a turbo, there's no need...
that subaru is interesting. One of my friends had an old Impreza Outback - a little less raised, but more raised than a normal Impreza and better in snow as a result. He lamented the loss of that model availability in recent years. I bet that XV Crosstrek will be popular here (everyone here drives subarus)... hopefully it handles better than the Forester... that's always the risk with raising the body...
