Bad ideas - Old Luxo Barges Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] (#32) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Justin VanAbrahams) on Mon, 1 Jul 2013 16:48:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Lately I've been thinking about buying some old super high end vehicle to play around with. Not for any good or practical reason, but just because I can.
My original thought was a W116 Benz. I had a 6.9 for a little while many years ago and it was a lot of fun, and I kind wanted to enjoy one again - probably not a 6.9 as they can be obscenely expensive to keep going, but maybe a 450SE or something. However, I consider '70s cars to be Really Old, and I've got a couple really old cars already and more seemed like a bad idea. It's not out of the question, but pretty unlikely.
After some further consideration, I think I've narrowed my options to either a late BMW E38 (probably a 740i Sport) or a Jaguar X300/X308 XJR. I've done a fair amount of reading on both of these rides, and oddly it seems like the Jag is the more reliable of the two - possibly on account of fewer gadgets, but possibly also a result of actually better parts. A significant reason for entertaining the R version is the improved transmission. The Ford unit in the regular XJs is just too risky. Might as well buy an SVX!
Anyone ever owned either of these? Specifically on the Jag, any practical difference between the I6 and V8-powered versions? I'm emotionally partial to the six, but it seems the eight comes with some other desirable updates that may make it the better choice.
Again, this is a purely emotional/fun purchase. These cars are cheap enough that if something horrible goes wrong it won't break the bank, and I have extremely modest usage needs - a day or two a week at most, maybe a few thousand miles a year on the outside.
(The only other car I'm really considering is an E39 540iT, but I am pretty comfortable with their, um, needs. :)
