Late, pre-XJ40 XJs had had pretty bad safety records, but of course by 1986 an XJ6 was a nearly 20 year old design. As with any brand that has long product refresh cycles, it's impossible to stay current with any benchmark, especially safety. Of course there are going to be horror stories of bizarre fatalities and whatnot, and it's often impossible to dissect and compare crash test data with real world safety and then cross-reference that against historical statistics and still know anything of actual value. ;)

I have no knowledge whatsoever of rust treatment, but that's pretty much a non-concern for me in California. My '62 Falcon has some mild surface rust in the wheel wells, my '67 Fleetwood has a rotten body mount - and that's about it. I'm sure a 2003 luxury car is going to fare better than either of them. I haven't read anything whatsoever about rust on the forums in the past few months, for whatever that's worth.

I think I said it somewhere else in this thread, but my practical needs for a car are pretty much limited to room for one and a reliable 8-9,000 miles a year. I'm not looking for the same things I was looking for when I bought my first Saab anymore - I don't do a lot of driving, I'm not hauling around a lot of computer gear. I could get by with a Hyundai Accent or a S65 AMG and be fine. ;) So, I tend to buy cars that I find interesting for one reason or another, and the XJR fits that bill wonderfully. I have always loved the XJ (I lust for a Series I XJ12) and this car let me participate in the look and feel (and the driving position ;) of the tradition while being completely modern under the skin.

You're right - zero regrets. It's a fine car with a fine history, and *dirt cheap* to boot. Highly commercially underrated car, IMHO.
