Or I guess a GTI with a trunk. I assume you are looking at the sedan, right?
VW's have been growing (like their Audi counterparts), so the passat is kind of large and might be slow even with a 2.0T? It is 9-5 sized.
I would investigate into current VW reliability. Some long-time VW owning friends of mine gave up a few years back, after lots of stupid electrical problems (coil packs etc)... this was a relatively new car at the time (an '11?). This may be less of a concern under lease.
How is the 08 Aero holding up? Do you have a pressing reason that forces you to change, or you just would like a newer car? I love how they redesigned the exterior of the 9-3 for 2008. The 9-3 Aero is a heck of a lot of car, kind of in a different price range than the cars you are comparing against. If you are a value-for-$ sort, you might consider Hyundai Genesis also. I'm assuming Audi, Beemer, and Benz are out if Volvo is... Some here have liked the Fords... Acura with SH-AWD? There are lots of sedans in this range to investigate if you don't need a wagon but matching the 08 Aero for fun, ergonomics, etc might be a challenge... The VW might not be a bad option.
I'm probably not that useful though, as I consider an 08 a practically new car!
good luck!
