Justin and NoSnaab always have good advice... Hondas seem to be getting better in many respects. Inlaws have a civic and really like it. Accord is not a bad idea vs Acura in that respect, at least if you can not afford the better Acuras. I suggested Acura after Tim's observations of the SH-AWD equipped MDX's performance, so if you can find a TLX (or whatever) with SH-AWD, it may be worth the price differential over the Subie.
Justin makes an excellent point that you need to do a long test drive in a car to really get it. It's not just the seats. Try to get a rental of one of these for a long weekend trip if you can. When our c900's were aging and we wanted something more modern for long haul trips with kids, we tried a number of long trips in rentals - Ford Freestyle, Mazda 5, Subaru Legacy Wagon, Subaru Forester (09), GMC Acadia... (among others)... The best of these by far was the Ford, so again, I'd take Justin's advice and test drive a newer Ford. I wanted to rent a Volvo or Audi wagon, but those are harder to find! We had rented a couple older Subarus prior to that. Anyway we had really wanted to like Subarus, but in every case, 2 hours sitting in the seats was torture. 3000 miles was worse than torture! 3000 miles in the 9-5 is fun. So we bought a 9-5.
(3000 miles in the c900's was also fun except with kids, it's stressful to think something might break en route! We still have 2 c900 daily drivers for around town.)
Of the Subarus, the 09 was the worst. If you get a subie, you need to get a manual! You should also get a turbo. The 09 Forester was the worst of the four we rented. I actually preferred the 04 Forester. The 02 Outback had a big V6 and loads of power but terrible power delivery through the automatic. That was true of every one of those automatic subies - the combo of the 4 speed with short gears meant they had all the performance and fuel economy of a c900 with a 3 speed auto... in some ways worse! The c900 auto is much faster to respond (in spite of being 1960's technology). Subie automatics are all now CVT, so maybe they've improved a little... anyway it may be a dog not due to the engine, but the tranny. If you didn't - try the manual!
People around here love the Subies, and maybe WRX/STI is good, but so far, I don't see what they see in them. Around here, after discounting, SAABs and Subies were the same price, and imho, I don't see how it is possible for someone to test drive them both and buy the subie... except that many subie owners are lemmings and don't test drive *anything* else!
good luck!
