I'm certainly willing to re-try Subies. My opinions are not that out of date though, as most of my friends drive new Subarus. They are hugely popular around here due to their winter capabilities. However, many of my friends are seriously underwhelmed by the Forester's driving characteristics. That said, this years' model may be vastly different and I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from checking them out... but sometimes it has more to do with the manufacturers' biases and objectives. Subarus have had low boxer engines forever, and that and many other features sound great in principle, but the proof is in the pudding and the 2009 forester had some of the worst driving dynamics of any car (or SUV or minivan!!) I've driven (and my subie friends with 2012 and 2011 foresters agreed that it was bad, and the saving grace was the stick)...
Actually, the most interesting model to me is the CrossTrek. One of my friends recently bought a CrossTrek hybrid, but I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. I believe that would have the CVT - I don't think it comes as a manual. Not sure if it is available with a turbo, but that would be interesting.
