While I havne't been able to start tuning or even decided who I wish to go with I feel I can shed a little light on the problem us younger folks can have when tuning. Its a combination of lots of things as you say Jak, a little hardware problem like a sensor on the way out that hasn't registered a CEL or code can cause a full headache with software. But as difficult as those are to find even for a fully trained tech take it from the owner of the car, he/she regardless of age can be just as stumped as you or any other tuner and become frustrated. Now this frustration gets amplified if he/she does not understand the workings of there car or turn a wrench themselves; thats just who it goes with cars on a general day to day basis.
Now on to the biggest issue for us younger saab drivers. The perception of a dollar based on an individuals age. Take me for example, I make at most 800 dollars a month in a college town which is really good. Now when parts start breaking and on average most of the parts on a saab cost around 100 dollars when you add in the shipping from one of the suppliers to your house/apartment. Well 100 dollars is alot of money to me compared to somebody who makes 8000 dollars a month. Now through in the downtime lost because I don't have my car and can't get to work and that while waiting for the part to the time I get it installed makes me lose 200 dollars worth of income for that month. As you can see thats 300 dollars out of my 800 that I desperately need to get buy. Compare this to the guy who can afford to leave his car with the dealer or may have a spare beater/afford a rental. You can see how that 100 dollars and the cost of the rental is chump change to the guy making 8000 a month compared to me.
So when you throw this all together in a tuning situation where a younger driver like myself has saved here and there for there stage 3 or whatever tune and because of a part that they didn't know was about to fail goes out and causes hell in the tuning process, its just gonna be really frustrating and comes out unfortunately in the incorrect manner saying its the tune untill the failed part is found. Once that part is found we may not have the funds available to fix it right away.
I've been down this road many times with even regular maitenance with my local dealership back home but I've always remained calm, except once where it was deserved based on the instructions I left before going on vacation, and they have kept my car on the lot with no extra charge as I got things together to get it all fixed.
From what I see Jak you do an awsome job, a job I would love to have and do. If I lived closer you would have seen my application many times over until I was hired. I could work for minumum wage with you because the rest of my paycheck would be made up in the skills and knowledge I'd learn from you about tuning and fabrication.
In the end, it all comes down to the value of a dollar and how much an individual works on their car and how much they understand about it. If I was getting a custom tune by you and saw my engine go because of oil pressure I'd throw a short tantrum but not at you, just the engine. From there I'd go to work on fixing the engine. From what I see come out of your shop I can guarentee you'll have business from me one day no matter what.
