Your point is exactly where my thinking is on the intercooler. Already there is a radiator plus an evaporator which are dissipating heat so there should be a benefit from removing the intercooler out of the stack. Not only will the intercooler perform better but the radiator & the evaporator should do their work more efficiently. Regarding CFM, the total area is indeed important & not too large. The same thing is true on the exhaust side where reduced pressure is good but compleat loss of back pressure is not a good thing. All things in balance.
