I wanted one of these long ago, so I did what I normally do - try to figure out how to make one myself. Below is basically what my mental exercise was. The short story: after considering the multiple parts and relatively complex geometry involved, I'm glad to get this thing finished & guaranteed for this price.
There is a base for the clamp, which supports and locates the steering rack with respect to the firewall. This has a saddle shape which is cut to fit the rack OD, drilled to fit the firewall, thick enough to last, etc. The matching clamp has an arch shape to fit the rack OD, flared out feet, drilled to match the base, matching thickness, etc. Both clamp parts have to be CNC cut for economy (versus a complex manual operation to create the necessary radii). Then there is the firewall-to-fender support that goes up, forward, and outwards with oddly angled feet at each end. This piece alone would take several tries to get "right" I think.
My background is mechanical engineering and I do have access to manual and CNC machines, but making this part would be such a PIA! I'm still in the buy! Thanks NickR!
