Saab vs WRX and EVO is comparing apples and oranges.

The only Saab that resembles these cars is Erickson's race car with AWD using Audi driveline technology. If you thought $28,000 was expensive...

Saabs are good, reliable, and when in properly tuned turbo form, are really fun daily drivers and decent occasional track cars. But you would spend way too much money making them competitive with a modified WRX or EVO. These cars come stock with AWD, bigger brakes, better suspensions, etc. Modern Saabs come with better seats and more room.

The stock WRX transmission can handle up to 300 TQ with no problems. My Aero tranny can't handle much more than this. I just rebuilt it and I am around 300 hp and 350 tq.

Both the EVO and WRX can handle the power MUCH better than my Aero, but I like my car for what I use it for. It's my daily driver. It's very safe, hauls ass, and can cruise down the highway at speeds that most large sedans can't even think of doing with reasonable safety. I have the power of the STI and EVO, but they would absolutely spank me on the track, standing start on the street, or any slippery surface.

The cost to make my car competitive with these cars would cost as much as paying their list price for the STI or EVO. (Including the cost of an Aero in excellent stock condition)

There are guys on this list that have put $17,000 in performance parts into their cars. If you include labor, this plus the price of the car easily puts you behind the wheel of a new EVO or STI with a warranty and much better resale value.
