A couple of comments from me here:
To Zip - the cars you mentioned do not "carry phenomenal cornering speeds" because of their drivelines. Cornerning speed is related primarily to rubber-on-road and vehicle weight, and secondarily to fore-aft weight balance. Maybe a higher degree of feedback and/or responsiveness and/or confidence led you to drive these cars faster than you've driven the Saab, but it wasn't the AWD. On the track, I've only been out-cornered by cars with MUCH more rubber (255+) than I had, at a similar weight. As for "real world" A-to-B driving, I think the AWD cars mentioned have a definite advantage.
To Eric - the key words you used are "intensely modified" or something like that. My SPG is getting less and less "Saab" every time I touch it, and it is losing it's comfort (hah!) and luxury (what?) in the process. For instance, I actually downgraded my stereo system the last time I had the car in peices because of the weight savings. It is only comfortable now because I bought high $$$ Sparco seats and the Trionic really helped with driveability without hurting power. Bottom line - this car is not comparable to a new Evo or WRX or whatever anymore, unless you are talking about a similarly prepared vehicle, in which case I would still kick ass (maybe!), but not by a large margin. And then, I can only drive hard until my transmission blows to peices *KABLOOEY*!!!
