between Precision and Accuracy.
A good example is that if you're shooting darts and land all 3 on the outside ring of the 19 section but you're really aiming at the bulls eye, your set of shots as a group was highly Precise, but not Accurate. If you land all 3 in the bulls eye, then that group was both Precise and Accurate. Or if you've drank too many beers and hit all over board, then you're neither Precise nor Accurate. :)
So I'll cede the point that various dyno shops may be Precise, but not necessarily Accurate when compared to a known standard. To definitively gauge the accuracy of a particular dyno you'd need a fairly large sample group of tests for comparison, or some other way to quantify and verify those results, like 1/4 mile times for example. But again, how close is close enough? I'd bet that Accuracy within +/- 7 or so peak HP would probably encompass what we're talking about here. Unless, and I'm seriously asking here, not trying to be a smart-alick, you (or others) have some direct experience that would suggest otherwise?
The sure thing, SAE correction has to be a multiplier. I don't know for sure if it's linear, but that correction isn't just some pie in the sky number or equation. As you noted, it's based upon the various environmental conditions: at that shop, on that day, at that time. That's the whole point of calling it a standard correction factor. And the whole point of going through that correction trouble is to try as best as possible to make it so that nickR and I can go on some chat board and brag about how much HP our cars make, and make it so that those numbers actually mean something. :)
So what king of HP does your STi make at the wheels? I've seen a bunch of numbers for them, and to run a stock 13.2 1/4 mile takes more than 300 crank HP dosen't it? Have you done any racing yet? I've owned and loved 2 Subaru's in the past and have nothing but respect for those machines--I can say for sure that they were a heck of a lot easier to work-on than my Saab is.
Since you're in the NE, you should check-out the link below. I'm taking a few days for a road trip and will be there with my 9-3 if you're looking for something to do on July 9th-10th. It's a great time!
