Reg. the Curtis C-46 Commandos very cool aircraft. Old aircraft seem to go to Canada to die LOL. One of our aircraft (N7316C) flew for Alaska airlines after leaving TWA service. It was used to fly all kinds of stuff into Canada and northern Alaska. At one point it even flew VW Bugs if you can believe that. They could get 12 of them in at once. The other aircraft in Maine (N8083H) was used in the 80's as a drug runner. It would fly nonstop from Colombia to Arizona at night. When they hit the US boarder they dropped to 200' (so they tell me) and fly out to the desert there they would push 20,000 lbs of pot out the back. They had a neat way of doing it so the aircraft would stay in balance. It has a Radar Alt. Installed and you can see a fake tail # that was painted on aircraft. It would take real guts( or be ½ crazy) to fly a 160,000# max gross weight 4 engine airliner 200’ off the ground at night with nothing but a chart and a radar Alt. My boss got the aircraft for $1. The problem was it was in the Honduras Jungle. They had landed it to reload and taxed off the end of the runway and sank in the mud striking the props and getting very stuck. It sat there for 5 or so years till my boss tracked it down and found the last reg. Owner. Getting it home was about $80,000 and another whole story. But I am running on yet again.
