I'm in my, um, upper 40s and bought my Sonett primarily for use as an autocross/rallycross/track day car, although it's still street stock and I drive it pretty much daily when the weather is good.

I got back into Saabs because I had had a string of 96es when I was in college and had enjoyed their combination of performance, practicality and weirdness. So once I had enough spare cash to afford an extra car, a vintage Saab was on the list of candidates.

Actually, I had first contemplated buying a Datsun SRL311 roadster, but the one I looked at had seriously evil handling caused by some damaged suspension parts for which no one seemed able to find replacements. It also was really cramped -- I felt as if I had put both feet down the same pants leg. And for about one week I owned a Fiat Abarth 1000 Spyder -- but gritted my teeth and scrapped it after an Italian-car expert told me how much hidden stuff was actually wrong with it and how much of a money pit it would be to get it sorted.

So when I found a decent-running Sonett III in need of rescue (owner kept it behind the garage in an area where his wife wanted to put in a garden) at an asking price of $1500, I took a look. It had the same solid feel I remembered from my 96es, only with better handling thanks to the lighter weight and lower CG. In terms of condition it was just about what I was looking for: good enough to drive as-is, but enough scope for improvement to have some fun with. And it was pretty sensible compared to the other cars I had looked at: lots of legroom, enough headroom, good heater, enough cargo space for groceries or weekend trips, etc.

So I bought it -- this was four years ago now -- and have been having a great time with it. Now my problem is that I covet more Saabs: I keep thinking that a late-model 95 with air would be an ideal daily driver and support vehicle for the Sonett at events, or that one of these days I really owe it to myself to dig up another stroker (my first car was a GT-850.) Intellectually I know I don't have enough money, time, or (especially) garage space to support a whole family of Saabs, but that doesn't stop me wanting to!
