...I have seen in graphic detail what happens when one changes the mechanics of how a car crumples. If you feel you must, I would suggest a custom roll cage.
My point was not as much to defend Sonett design as to point out that the car survived a roll with the passenger compartment intact. The fact that the fiberglass fell off belies the fact that the rear bumper was intact, as was the rear floorpan (at least on cursory inspection of the picture link you provided). Remember, there is a roll cage built into the Sonett.
As with any old cars, rust will compromise structural integrity. IMHO, the best and safest thing to do is repair the rockers and floor pan in a manner consistent with Saab's original design.
