Late 60s through 1970 had the 1500cc motor. Same horsepower, but slightly better throttle response and freer reving due to 9.0 to 1 compression and slightly lighter internals. Also the big bumpers, bars in the doors, full steel windshield hoop, slightly thicker fiberglass etc. added enough weight during the last couple of production years to be noticeable. I have a 1972 with a transplanted 1500cc motor with no carpets, upholstry, etc and welded in braces between the front strut towers and fender walls. So it is stiffer, lighter, and more tossable than the 74 I used to own even though there are no performance parts installed. By comparison, the 74 felt like it was plodding through the curves. Add some horsepower and lighten the revolving parts as well as apply stiffer springs to the later cars and I think they would benefit.
