I remember driving friends' Chargers and 'Cudas "back in the day," and let's face it, those cars were crap. Now at least some of them are drawing big bucks in at least some auctions, simply because some people with lots of money have convinced themselves this would be a fun way to spend some of it. There are still lots of decent Mopars to buy at less-highly-publicized venues, at less bordering-on-ridiculous prices.

The same is true in other taste-based marketplaces. Earlier this week I was reading a story in the New York Times about a rich lady from Orlando who was in New York to run around to art sales. She was planning to spend $230,000 that weekend, buying fashionable paintings by "hot" contemporary artists recommended by her paid adviser (a university art professor.) She said she likes the paintings, but what she really likes is rubbing elbows with other art collectors and having something in common to talk about with them.

So, a lot of what people are willing to pay is based more on how much they've got than on how much is invested in the whatever-it-is. The fact is that there are people who can easily afford to spend $25,000 on impulse just to have something not all their friends have, so why shouldn't it be a Sonett? And as for the price... hey, if you don't ask, you don't get.

I hope Mr. Lorenzini can sell his car at something near his target price. It would be great to move the top price on Sonetts up closer to what it costs to restore one well, and there will still be more reasonably priced ones around for those who know where to look.
