Steven,

I have a 1989 9000T 5spd with almost 198,000 miles on it. Besides the sagging headliner, which
from what I gather happens to be the 'Saab disease,' I never encountered any of the problems
you have with your Saab. When I first started driving it, I occassionally had problems shifting
from first to second, the shifter would not glide in as smoothly as with the other gears, but
I eventually got the hang of sliding it in there smoothly and effortlessly.

I must add that when other people, who are not Saabers, drive my Saab, they grind the gears.
A manual Saab, or at least those built in the 1980s, is a thinking person's car; one has to
learn the timing of *their* car and when to shift and where those slots in the gear box are.
Once one learns all this, changing gears becomes natural and effortless. Personally this
is one the characteristics I love about Saab. Saabs are like people they have their own particular
characteristics and idiosyncracies. Now if one wants a car without any character, a car that
shifts gears with the mental and physical effort of an automatic -- and there is abosolutely
nothing wrong with this, the majority of people after all don't want character in their cars
-- then one shouldn't drive a Saab.

Furthermoe, every all parts of my Saab -- with the exception of the wear and tear stuff, ie.
clutch, breaks, spark plugs, etc. -- are the ORIGINAL! It has the original water pump, AC,
headliner (though sagging), TURBO, transmission, etc. Nobody else I know can make such a claim.
And there is not one person I personally know who has close to 200,000 miles on their car,
or even close to it! But again I live in CA, where people have to have the newest model car.
Wait a minute, I do know someone with a Subaru, but personally, I rather have a '89 9000T
than a '91 Subaru Legacy sedan, which also happens to be an automatic.

I have driven my Saab from California to New England, where people really love Saabs, and back
to California TWICE! While in New England, I met an elderly gentleman in the parking lot of
a Stop and Shop. He approached me and asked, 'How many miles do you have on yours?' At first
I had no clue about what he was talking about until he said, 'Your Saab. I was watching you
as you drove into the lot.' 'I have about 125,000 miles on it, and I am thinking of selling
it now that it has such high mileage,' I replied. '125,000 miles,' he said, 'why you haven't
even broken it in. What are you talking about selling it? You have to at least break it in.'
I looked at him quite puzzled and wondered what does he mean by breaking it in. He pointed
to his '86 900, and exclaimed, 'I have 365,00 miles on my Saab. The car has never given me
any problems. You have to bring the car at least to 200,000 miles. I have 365,00O miles on
it and everything is original. Never had any problems w!

ith this car, and I still continue to drive it all over New Engladn during our harsh winters
and summers.' It was at that moment when I realized that I can't sell my Saab. Not when I
don't even have 200,000 miles on it.

If my Saab ever finally dies, and sometimes I wish it did because I wouldn't mind a newer Saab,
the choice in my mind will not be whether I will buy another Saab; but rather, whether the
new Saab will be a 900, 9000, or 9-3. Personally I don't like those 9-5s because they look
too much like those new Volvos, which sort of looks like a Taurus. I hope Saabs will never
look like a Buick.
