So far I have seen nothing to indicate that the 9-3SS will match performance of the SE or certainly the Viggen models of the current 9-3. I also highly doubt that it will be more easily mod-able than the current car, though the updates they've made to handle torque steer, etc. should help the drivability when it's souped up.
Depending on the BMW you're talking about, a stock 9-3SE can beat many of them in just about any race except 0-60 (rear drive vs. front drive isn't really a fair contest in that race)
