I didn't say that the new engine necessarily made less torque than the old at 2200-2500 or 4500-4800. What I did say is that the narrower torque band, combined with the extra weight, made for decreased performance.
I see now that my area calculation however was flawed, as I didn't give the new engine any credit for the 2200-2500 and 4500-4800 bands. However, I'm willing to bet it falls off quickly enough at both ends that the comparison still favors the old engine.
Nonetheless, I must agree that you are correct in that we need a curve to be sure. Didn't I say that to start with?
