I will not claim that the 9-3 is the best handling car in the world, but to say it feels like it's gonna roll over on it's side in cornering over 30mph is ridiculous. The body roll can be excessive in some situations, but it will still run loops around most vehicles out there. Higher torque output in the old 9-3 versus the new one would also be a huge advantage coming out of corners. Having owned both the C900 and the 9-3, I can say that the 9-3 is a superior vehicle in every category I've been able to assess so far (can't assess reliability 10 years out for obvious reasons, and neither can anyone else).
I conceded that the new 9-3 is rumored (haven't driven it personally) to improve on the handling characteristics. The independent rear suspension should certainly help. I also conceded that the 6spd manual should be an improvement. However, in terms of engine performance, there simply is no comparison in my opinion. The "old" 9-3 is the last in a very long line of evolution for the 2.0l Saab engine..it's been refined over the course of three decades to be a pretty impressive piece of work. The new one holds promise, but I think it will take time for that promise to be realized.
Cheers,
'Roo
